Damn Zappo, that 3DMark03 is what my AMD64 gets.. what video card did you use?
I love this laptop, only drawback is that the CTRL button gets friggin hot, I mean HOTTTT, the rest of the thing stays reasonably cool. I guess a 3.4 g P4 running full bore with a fairly hot graphics card has to toss a decent amount of heat (the back fan exhaust would be a decent hairdryer) , but that CTRL key is my crouch key and gets used a boatload in FarCry... have to work on some kind of pinkie "potholder" soon...

That's pretty but, my next laptop is definitely going to be a desktop-replacment laptop... or whatever the catchy name is for a laptop that uses normal desktop-sized parts... I've got a friend with an Alienware laptop like I'm describing but, I really haven't heard much else about them.
Anyway, I want to be able to upgrade for cheaper, laptop parts are too expensive!
The floral lounger the laptop is sitting in looks cozy!

Technically this is what you would consider a desktop replacement notebook. It uses a standard 3.4ghz P4 chip, not a special notebook cpu. The thing tilts the scale at around 10lbs without the brick i think, so its not something you want to carry too far. Between the P4, the huge (17") screen, the 256mb video card and the raid array hard drives (2x60gb) it chews through the 12 cell battery in under 90 min (even less if you are running an intense 3D game), so you really need to be plugged in. I consider the battery to be little more than a UPS.
This model is slightly larger than Alienware's gaming notebook. Its base is made my a Chinese company called Clevo that supplies notebooks to Hypersonic, Voodoo, Sager, Falcon etc. The aftermarket companies tweak the systems a bit, add some different components, sometimes paint them etc. The Voodoo version of this can run upwards of $5k US .... (damn Canadians!! ) They are the fastest notebooks out there for the time being..
Oh, the benchmark is available at www.futuremark.com (http://www.futuremark.com) I think .... Very useful to see what tweaks really do to your system ...

Nvidia hasn't had an honest score in 3dmark for over a year now. It's a useless benchmark because of them. At first Futuremark came out and said they were cheating, but they stopped because they realized they were basically saying "HEY OUR BENCHMARK IS NOW OBSOLETE".
My comp is virtually identical to Zappo's (I have a 2500+ but it was running at 2358 when I BM'd), but it has a 9800 Pro. Even at the shittiest texture quality and filtering etc, it was about 5800. No way in hell is a 5950 that much faster in real games.

Eomer, i have personally not only seen, but i built zappo his new pc for 1600 including monitor. his pc is VERY similar to mine but faster processor by a tad same ram same everything but he has the 5950ultra... and let me say this. compared to my 9800pro,his graphics BLOW mine out of the fucking water. he's got his nvidia oc'd easily w/ his huge fan/heatsink on it to like 540mhz like 25% higher then stock and its still only like 32celcius on full load.
we both play city of hero's his graphics are WAY WAY higher set then mine and he has less frame rate loss then me...its sick. so in conclusion the 5950 is insanely better then the 9800 pro, 9800xt i think would be close or dead even but not pro. no way a 220$ card can compare to a 400$ one.

If Zappo is getting such a big performance boost over you it's most likely some setting that's wrong on your computer, or something else.
The 5950 is not an "insanely better card" than the 9800 Pro.
Here's some tests:
http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/vga-charts-05.html
It also shows the XT cards is not worth buying, they are only minor upgrades over the Pro cards.

My comp just sucks I guess. I can't get over 1111 even with over clocking. Or maybe I have something set wrong.
I spent about 1400 including monitor, printer and speakers etc.. It should get better than 1111!
However I have no lag in WoW or in EQ and the graphics are awesome so I guess I shouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 5950 is faster than a 9800 Pro, whether any of them are overclocked or not (mine can run at XT speeds, but it artifacts a little at that speed). But it's not 20-30% faster, which is what the 3dmark scores would indicate.
Basically I was just making the point that 3dmark is useless, other than maybe for stress testing overclocked settings.

Agreed, the tests on tomshardware does indicate that the 5950 is indeed a bit quicker than the 9800 Pro, but probably only 5-10% judging from the tests.
It all depends on the game as well, some run quicker on ATI cards, some quicker on Nvidia.

i used to get a 4200 score with my fx 5700 ultra, which i only replaced 2 months ago with my 9800 pro. And comparing them both in UT2k4, the 9800 pro is only a little better.
You guys talking about the 9800pro 256? cuz i only got the 128. Zappos 5950 ultra 256 can handle CoH with 1600x1200 with 200% world and 200% char details on. Mine, inorder to keep a similar frame rate is on 1280x1024 with 70% world and 90% character detail.
And upgrading from the 5700ultra to the 9800 pro I noticed a big improvement in actual picture QUALITY. But only really went up one resolution size. I really don't think anything is wrong with my 'puter. Both CoH and UT2k4 both say nvidia prefered however.

One thing to check when you run the 3Dmark03 is to make certain you dont have a boatload of other crap running in the background. You'd be amazed at how many totally unnecessary processes might be hidden and cranking away your precious CPU time.
The biggest impact on the score tho, is indeed your video card. The problem is that many drivers are "tweaked" (Nvidia and ATI have both been notorious, Nvidia likely the most blatant) to boost benchmark #'s above and beyond reality.
Also, the newer benchmarks are heavily geared towards testing features of Dx9 capable vid cards, so do not necessarily despair if your semi-older, perfectly adequate dx8 capable video card benches lower than you would expect. If the games you mostly play don't take advantage of all the bells and whistles of the high end DX9 cards, the numbers of these benchmarks prolly dont matter all that much to you...

Well Nallick, when you run 3dmark does it run all the demos, including Nature? Only the newest cards can run Nature. Your 3dmark score is simply the average FPS from each game multiplied by a number (certain benchmarks are worth more or less), all added up. So if your card can't run Nature, like my older 8500, then your score will be piss poor.
As far as the 9800Pro vs 5950, if you go here: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=2044&p=11
You can see that the 9800XT and 5950 are very close, although the Nvidia card seems to do a lot better depending on the drivers you use (oh the irony!). The two games I pay the most attention to are Far Cry and Halo, since they a couple of the very few games that are "next generation" type games that use shaders and what not. Most other games they are about the same.

Yes my card runs Nature. Everything runs. However when looking at all the trees etc in the nature demo it drops to 2-5 fps. I have a Geforce FX5200 which I believe is bottom of the line FX cards. I have already replaced the shitty Sound card Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1 that came in my comp with an Audigy 2 which made a huge difference. Now to replace the Vid card I guess. Hell I could have gotten an Alien Ware or similar for the price I am going to end up paying upgrading my brand new comp. I must say dell sucks ass. You think you are getting a good deal because they put name brands on their hardware and you find out later its just imitations of those cards and are extreemely tuned down. I was wondering why Dell could create a comp for the same price or less than I could build my own identical comp. Its because they don't put in the comp what they tell you they are.

Ah, the 5200 was a pretty poor card, regardless of whose name was stamped on it. Most of the first Geforce FX cards were, to be honest. But then again, they are the very low end, and an ATI card in the same price range wouldn't be much better. IMO, wait a month, by then stores will be clearing out their older cards (9800's, 5900's, those) and you will get one for a good price. At least, if you are trying to stay on a budget.
Otherwise, I hear there are some awesome cards for like 500 dollars out!

Did you have any problems running that GX-7 in EQ. I can not stay conected to EQ for more then 3 or 4 min. If you had the same problem, what did you do to fix the issue?
