It's a holiday because in 1867 that's roughly the date that Canada became it's own country, and was no longer simply a British colony. Used to be called Dominion Day, though, until we got our Constitution back 25 or so years ago.

Forgot to mention that the reason I say "roughly" in regards to the date is that Confederation was conceived on a boat by a bunch of drunks, and it's hard to pin anything down.
