Help me fix my WoW!!

Yeah it sometimes looks like that when i play Counter-Strike too. It seems it's luck of the draw. Sometimes everything's working fine but other times everything's just screwed up. I usually just reboot a few times and hopes it goes away. I guess i'll just open up my case and reseat everything.

Oka- when my screen looked like that, my video card fan had detached and was hanging by only one connector. I didnt realize for about a week or so as things would play fine for awhile then crap out. Then my Screen flashed to vertical black and red lines... and i smelled smoke. Actually bubbled the plastic around the chip on my video card :) Which made me happy as I was afraid it was my monitor ( its a really nice samsung lcd) so 300 for a new card was much better than 800 for a new monitor :)

Yes, definitely check the fan (easier said than done, with the usual setup being upside down). Worse comes to worse, just buy 2 cards, SLI, and call it a day.

Yeah, i checked the fan and it all seems to be working correctly so that doesn't seem to be the problem. and yeah I would go out and buy two brand spanking new 7800 gtx's and sli them but i'm about a grand or two short :P

You might want to double check on all of your drivers and directx and run the repair utility that came with wow in the world of warcraft folder and or test out your computer hardware for safe measures before purchasing another video card (Since having to pay up $100 for a decent graphic card [talking about radeon 9600 xt which I have] at an unconvenient time is really a hassle).

Keep note when graphic card driver packages tell you to turn off your antivirus program when it is running, since anti virus programs (especially norton I heard) like to keep all the driver related files under its protection and will cause serious errors to occur during the driver installation by allowing some to be installed outside of its protection and not allowing some files in the package to be installed because the file to be overwritten is protected. Also it is a good practice to uninstall the previous driver version before installing a new driver (Yes I know, it gets annoying cause windows requires you to boot after you uninstall the old drivers, and then when it is done rebooting windows will put its own craptastic drivers in, then you have to reboot again because windows did that, THEN! you can install the new drivers and reboot windows again.....)

Really it could be numbers of possibilities. Windows being corrupted (I'm presuming you are using windows OS), the graphic card got nudged somehow (so taking it out and putting it back into its slot will be your best option), motherboard is starting to have issue (I've had the agp slot of a motherboard die out on me two times... graphic card worked fine on a friend's pc), graphic card fan (as many people have said), driver issues (both graphic card and motherboard drivers), electrical splurge caused by a powersupply at one time or another to damage a certain component of your computer, a bug flying into your computer and short circuiting your computer while it is running, heck, even too much dust collected over the months can contribute to a computer going Kabloomi.

With all that, take it one step at a time with hardware first (since it is easier to figure out if it is a hardware issue than a software issue because of the insane amount of codes and possible conflict that is impossible to figure out for anyone other than a skilled professional of that field). Take your graphic card and put it in a friend's computer (if they let you), and let your friend use the graphic card for 3-4 days to see if he/she can emulate what happens to you on their pc. While doing that, borrow his/her graphic card and put it in your own pc. If your friend doesn't encounter the problem and you still do on your pc with your friend's graphic card, then try the software approach.. The last thing you want to do is to say that your motherboard is at fault, since windows cannot handle a motherboard change. (Don't know why, mac os x can.) If you switch out a motherboard but keep everything, you still need to reinstall windows because it won't boot saying roughly that the architecture of the pc has changed and windows cannot boot due to it specializing to the previous architecture.

Oh, and don't forget that the powersupply might cause something like this to happen. A lot of people overlook the importance of powersupply and its ability to provide stable power supply to the components that need it. If any hitch in the power supply is to occur, something like what you see, or framerates dropping, or anything really can happen. Think of it this way. You need your heart to pump the necessary blood through your veins to get to that part of the body in question. Wouldn't you want what would be the heart of the computer system (the power supply) to do the same in an optimized manner?

.... That was a mouthful, but really it takes time and patience to figure this out, or a big wad of cash to start all over with a brand new pc :D

Yeah, I woulda popped in a new power supply a long time ago but unfortunately I have a dell. And for some reason dell decides that they want to make non standard power supplies so that I can't upgrade :( It barely has enough power to run my radeon 9800 pro, I had to take out my tv tuner card just so it could have enough. On the plus side though, everything seems to be running smoothly ever since I re-seated my video card. I'm suspecting that that might have been the problem. and for some stupid reason dell doesn't believe in screwing in your pci/agp cards, they have some sort of clip device that holds it all in place. :rolleyes:

So in summary, DON"T BUY DELL!!!!!!!!

That screenshot is very similar to the screenshots I took with the videocard I bought. I'll post them when I get home.

I eventually had to send the card back after trying every driver I could find.
