"If I don't move, I'll blend right in and he'll never see me!"

It's been ~ 10 years since I've been to a zoo so I hit the Philadelphia zoo on a nice sunny afternoon. Too bad everything was hiding or sleeping. I probably should've drove the extra few miles and gone to the Washington DC zoo. The Philly one didn't have all that much :(

Yep 20D you nailed it. I wish I had a better lense that day, would have gotten much better pics, could not get close enough..

Stock lens :( Need a 80-150

I dont take that many pics, normally not an issue, but wanna upgrade..

Depending on your budget, the Canon 70-200 f/4.0L is great for shots outdoors and good lighting. $470-500 used. Prices on them will probably drop in a few weeks when Canon releases the 70-200 f/4.0L IS at Photokina.

Cool, thanks for the tip...

I will check that out. Sounds like a perfect upgrade for me..

Is Amazon.com reliable for the Canon 30D?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HJZSA6/ref=pd_rvi_gw_1/102-7432942-2016104?ie=UTF8

Furthermore, is that a good price for that camera?

Thanks!

Yah, Amazon.com is reliable. They'll generally ship it from a photo store; which one depends who has the best price. I've previously bought things from Amazon that came from Adorama or B&H Photo, whom I've bought direct. You can buy just the body for ~ $1150: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=448466&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

This is what some people do since the kit lens is average, at best. Most will upgrade to something better a few months later. Depending on your budget, a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is a good all around starter lens for ~ $430 new.

If you're willing to buy used, fredmiranda.com is a good place. I've seen the 30D w/ kit lens going for $1050-1100 used. I buy all of my used camera gear from that website.

Previous post deleted - it is out after all :P

Canon 70-200 F/4 L IS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=457678&is=USA&addedTroughType=search)

I wonder if it's worth paying an extra ~$400 to upgrade from F/4L to F/2.8L

Some people at the forums are saying that IS is not that necessary if you know how to hold your camera well. But some are saying that the IS truly shines in poor lighting / dark environments... Hehe - I don't know who to side with :P

$1200 for the 4.0L IS is not worth it, imo.

I'd spend the extra $400 on the f/2.8L IS. If I wasn't doing motorsport photography and didn't need the Mode 2 IS, I'd buy the cheaper f/2.8L non IS. The IS is worth about 2-3 shutter stops so it does help handholding indoors. I've held mine at 200mm as low as 1/15 without camera shake.

But, when comparing 1 full stop between 2.8 and 4.0, I'd take the 2.8 for more blur of the out of focus area.

Hey D, do you mostly shoot with MF? Some people are so avid about shooting MF including those who were AF fantatics prior who got better with MF and claim they'd never go back to AF...

How about u?

99% autofocus. With the 45 point autofocus system on the 1D MKII (that is top in the class), there's no need to mess with manual focus since the system is pretty damn accurate, even in low light.

When it's pitch black and no lighting, I'll put on my flash (Canon 580EX) and it'll emit several laser beams for autofocus.

This page describes/explains nicely how the AF system works on the 1D MKII: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos1dmkii/page4.asp
