Their technology is awesome. Epic and id are definitely taking notes here.
A lot of their game tech was showcased at this year's SIGGRAPH. The LoD system totally makes this editing work. I am also pretty impressed especially with the shadows of dense vegetation.
The heightfield + voxel field to create overhanging cliffs and caves makes my head hurt from a design standpoint. It also sounds like an overwhelming amount of data to stream from disk. They mention procedural texturing effects for ground vegetation which sounds great as well.
As an aside, someone here knows a guy over at Crytek who mentioned that the DX10 showcasing really did not improve their engine very much. Mostly, it was designed with DX9 in mind and then tweaks in some parts, I imagine. So, you're not really seeing tons of GREAT DX10 effects here - it's just marketing propaganda.
