Is it just me? I have never gotten so much spam that has passed through GMails spam filter. Been going on for the past 2 or 3 days. :(

There seems to be a new (well new to me) type of email spam going around where the subject is "message delivery failure" usually containing a fake server response with advertising at the bottom.

I got like 1000 of those in the last week, thunderbird spam filter seems toget most of them though.

Gmail users reporting major spam uptick

Monday, June 1, 2009

Users of Google's free webmail service Gmail have been tweeting like crazy on Twitter that their inboxes are being inundated with spam.

The problem, according to posters at Google's Gmail help forum, has been ongoing for about the last month to six weeks.

But more than a month later more Gmail users are increasingly voicing complaints on the Google forums and via Twitter that their spam levels have noticeably jumped up.

On Monday, a post on the Search Engine Roundtable forum observed that "[i]t seems like something spiked up bad today, based on the volume of posts over the weekend."

Close to 100 posters have responded to a question posed by Gmail user HobbyFarming reporting that hundreds of spam emails are getting through email filters into the user's inbox.

"The spam is hitting the inbox over and over 100s per day that is NOT an exaggeration and I am about ready to go back to Yahoo Mail because I now see why people get frustrated with GMAIL. And this is a NEW issue as things were never this bad until the last few weeks," HobbyFarming wrote back on April 21st.

A response, posted April 22nd from a Google employee named Sarah, said Google was aware of the problem and was looking into it.

And yet all my gmail accounts contain no spam, other than newletters from websites I signed up for.

as an experiment when I saw this I made a brand new account on gmail. After just checking it I had about 100 emails in my spam box about getting penis enlargement and Viagra from Canada in 2 days now. Not once sent one email from me nothing. I'd say there is a problem!

Small number of Gmail users hit by spam

Google says only a tiny fraction of its Gmail users were affected by a foul up in configuring its spam filters that led to a flood of spam leaking through to some users.

"Due to a misconfiguration in some of our servers, we weren't filtering out spam for about 1% of Gmail users. We've fixed the problem, and we're sorry for the inconvenience," says Google spokesman Jason Freidenfelds

You'd think the sky was falling if you followed this topic via Twitter. Gmail users tweeted about being inundated with spam, with some contending the problem has been going on for the past month to six weeks.

Researchers at Sophos declined comment, saying they have not observed elevated levels of spam that correspond to what Gmail users say they are seeing, although noting that could be because of any number of reasons.

Freidenfelds declined to supply an estimate of the total number Gmail users affected. And since Google doesn't reveal how many folks use Gmail, it's impossible to do the math.

No unexpected spam got through to me either; yes, plenty of spam in the spam folder - but I rarely check that.

By the way, "we weren't filtering out spam for about 1% of Gmail users".
