This is a work in progress. I'm trying to get my "Wishlist" shared for the public on NewEgg but it's being stupid. Please post suggestions/advice/whatever.

Wait on video, the new nVidia Fermi cards are appearing in the wild. A few sites are reported to have test cards, and some of the etailers are listing preorders.

And the processor isn't worth it, Intel stopped binning the extreme edition i7s so you're only paying for the unlock. I'd guess they still make extreme editions from the choicest spots on the wafer, but it's luck-of-the-draw if you'll get one thats 'better'. The overclock sites have shown that the cheapest i7 has just as much chance to hold steady at the high speeds that an extreme edition can hit.

I agree with Peotr on the CPU, you can pay about half as much for a nearly identical CPU with either of the below (and both of these should be able to run at 3.33GHz with a few BIOS tweaks)...

$569.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115211
$589.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115224

If you can afford the ssd's even if you go with 64 gigs TRUST ME they are so worth the money. Random seek over 241 mbs on my unit in comparssion to my velociraptors at 14.9 mbs

First of all, thanks for the input.

I guess I figured I wanted the Best of the Best CPU (Cardinal style). I've always been worried about over-clocking (especially without water cooling) but maybe I should just go for the 3.2ghz i7-960 for nearly half the price. As far as video cards go I'm not so sure now since the new nVidia line is coming out in like 4 weeks but they're also $500 each. I have fun building this thing online but when it comes to thinking about the price tag I want to cry.

Why not just get the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202 which is half the price of the 950 and can easily be OC to the same as the 950 is capable of?

Can do that too... I just thought he was looking to throw away money since he picked out the Extreme to start!

Aerothas

Okay, I'll admit I had been drinking when I decided on the i7 extreme. By saving $500 going to a more reasonable CPU I can buy other neato things like a cool monitor or uber expensive SSDs. I think you need a monitor to see stuff. I'm still completely undecided on GPUs since Peotr made me cry.

CB are you using an SLC or MLC drive?

You could save $80 by not buying the Ultimate version of Windows 7. Are you really going to use these features?

* Run many Windows XP productivity programs in Windows XP Mode (separate download).
* Connect to company networks easily and more securely with Domain Join.
* In addition to full-system Backup and Restore found in all editions, you can back up to a home or business network.
* Help protect data on your PC and portable storage devices against loss or theft with BitLocker.
* Work in the language of your choice and switch between any of 35 languages.

Keep in mind that while it's fairly common now, BitLocker I believe still requires a mobo that supports it.

As far as cases go- is there a major difference between a power supply mounted on the bottom as opposed to the top?

Allara
02-24-2010, 12:56 PM
With it on the bottom, your PSU cables may not be quite long enough to hit the motherboard. With all the higher-end PSUs I've used, this isn't a problem. Mounting it on the bottom gives the case more stability. Not sure if it helps with air flow/heat distribution. I tend to like them on the bottom.

As for cases - get the CoolerMaster HAF full ATX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119160&cm_re=coolermaster_haf-_-11-119-160-_-Product. You won't regret it. Great airflow, huge fans, whisper quiet, tons of room for all your massive video card and custom CPU coolers.

I'm using it and I don't think I'll use another case for quite some time. It has the support for liquid cooling too if that's your thing. Only downside, the power button is on the top of the case - which makes it a pain if you keep the case inside a storage area (like a desk).

I like that you have the option for top or bottom mounting the power supply, I may get that for my next build.

Funny that you mention that case. I was looking at the mid tower version of that. Not so sure I want the full size but those cases look pretty freaking sweet.

Aero I use the 922 like you've got linked.

It is plenty big enough to be considered a full-size, imo.

Get the full case man, with the air flow issues caused by the big ass fucking graphics cards these days, I'm not sure how folks don't. I have a mid tower atm and I'm dying. There is just no room in the damn thing for adding raid HD and it is a nightmare to do anything in it with the fucking graphics card I have *HUGE*

The mid-size is gigantic... bigger than most full-sizes I've seen. Mileage may vary, but I think it works great with an 8.5 inch card...

Yup, just depends on if you're doing water cooling or not. I have mine bottom mounted and it's very stable.

If u are going to be wc case selection is much more important. Judging by want u are running u want to be able to fit a 120 x3 rad or maybe 2 120x2 rads. After going wc u will not want to put up with the noise of air !!

U might want to read up on the difference between oem and retail versions of windows. I have read that the system builder oem copy is tied to what ever mb u activate it on. In like if anything major changes it want be reactivated like it was with windows xp for free.

I not sure how i will handle this. I tear my stuff down and build new shit all the time. I never had to reactive my window's xp and its been on 4 totally different systems so far. Where as if anything major changed on tinks system he had to reactive window's xp.

So far the wac hack working pretty good with the rc windows 7.

Maybe Thlayli can shed some light on this !

Okay then! I updated the list on the first post. I decided on the full tower version of that case since its only like 2 inches larger than the mid tower (hmm?). I should be ordering that stuff when a check clears in a few days. I also remembered that I got a $200 NewEgg gift card so theres my second 128 SSD for teh most expensive RAID 0 ever.

Elk I appreciate you trying to recruit me to the dark side of water cooling but I have NO experience with that stuff and will probably end up breaking something. Using air cooling even if I over clock the CPU to like 3.4 gigawattz (maybe even 3.8) should work from what I've read.

Again, post any more final suggestions/complaints about the new list...
Thanks again for all your help people! :)

I wish I would've gone water cooling. The fans on my new machine drive me crazy at times.

Get a headset with a mic ! Bonus: you can be heard on vent ... hmm, or is that not really a bonus ;).

Get a headset with a mic ! Bonus: you can be heard on vent ... hmm, or is that not really a bonus ;).

Or just buy bigger fans. There's one simple rule, the bigger the fan the quieter it is. Really, the machine you built to skimp on the case/fans? Those a such a small part of the price but they are easily worth their weight in gold.

That seems rather high unless you're OC'ing a good bit.

Can you give us a little more insight into your set up? I'm running an E8400 in a HAF922 at 39C and lower idle, the most I get up to is 51ish at max load and that is with no aftermarket heatsink or extra case fans (though that will soon be solved!)

Granted, I'm not running DDR3, but I do have a big 260 GTX to pump out a good bit of heat itself.

Domathoine
03-07-2010, 07:25 PM
Run your cords behind everything; there are plenty of hookins.

See if you can't put the tower a few inches off the floor. I've got mine about 6inches up so it can vent out the bottom as well.

Otherwise, not sure why you're running so hot. maybe the 9600 runs hotter than my 260?

Wresh

Ya, sitting it right on the carpet like that is not good for air flow.

Also, see if you can't pull it out an inch or two more from the back. Your back fan is almost 1/2 way covered by that support for your desk (the wood). That is restricting airflow as well.
