Yeah, but then another ~300 per CPU...

and another ~3200 (800 x4) for 48GB of memory (lol.. I just had to go there). But even the 2GB sticks are running about 175-200 per set of 3 (and you need at least 2 sets of 3 to run 2 CPU's in triple channel).

I imagine you can put a i7 in there. You can probably put two on the board, but only one would be recognized. If you want two physical processors to work together it would have to be Xeons.

Why stop there? The newest Xeons are going to have 6 cores. Two of those would have a potential 24 threads.

There isn't a game on the planet that can make use of 24 threads, and the bandwidth on your internet connection is gonna get saturated before you can Torrent enough porn.

But it does have some deep philosophical potential. I could get great joy from the knowledge that I am playing on a computer that is bigger than the server that is tendering for me. Since I still make motorboat noises while playing driving games, it would give me great pleasure to anthropomorphalize the conversation between my computer and the server:

The current LGA1366 form factor is the same for both the I7 and Xeon CPU lines.

I don't think the CPU's will care, as long as you have the same CPU replicated in both slots - so you can go with the 6 core I7 or the 6 core Xeon (or 4 core, etc.), and it should just work.

I wanted to be sure about this before I replied. The Core i7 processors have one Quick Path Interconnect (QPI), which allows the processor to talk to the system. The X58 chipset also has one QPI which allows it to talk to one processor.

The 5520 chipset has two QPIs allowing it to talk to two processors. In theory this could mean two i7s, but this violates Intel's platform rules since Intel specifications state that processors that are designed dual-CPU systems should have two QPIs. The only socket 1366 processors with two QPIs are the Xeon 5XXX series (the Core i7s have one, the Xeon 3XXX processors have one, the Xeon 5XXX processors have two, and the Xeon 7XXX processors have four.)

A CPU only needs one QPI to talk to the chipset on the motherboard, but Intel's specification for a dual CPU system also requires a QPI so the two chips can exchange data with each other.

eVGA is hinting that they may include a BIOS workaround that will allow two Core i7s to work together in a 5520 motherboard, but if both CPUs were working together on a multithreaded task where they needed to share information, that information would have to be sent back to the 5520 chipset before being sent to the other processor. Latency is increased about 4 times.

And there are further rumors that eVGAs BIOS tweak is undependable and can cause system crashes, and that eVGA is preventing software that could use all cores on both CPUs (such as rendering or video editing software) from splitting tasks across both CPUs.
