Anyone ever work with Joomla in developing/administrating a website? I have no clue what I am doing but was giving the task of making a website using Joomla. I have no clue what I am doing honestly and after the guides and tutorials have a website with a whole 5 words.
3 my website title
2 Main menu "Home" and "Contact Us" links.
I can't even seem to figure how to change backgrounds/fonts/anything. I can add stuff to my main menu, add text to articles (which i don't need), add templates (which don't seem to do anything yet say loaded successfully.)
My goal is to have a website similar to http://icanhascheezburger.com/
I want it to not look so plain, allow people to upload a photo and have it rated/fb like/tweet/digg, and allow people to comment on the pictures.
Any help would be great!
I feel alone in the dark with my pants around my ankles right now.:(:(:(

God help you.
There is nothing wrong with Joomla, but it addresses problems that most people won't have. The implementation of Joomla has gone beyond the original concept so that now it's almost as complex as the web model that it wants to replace.
Questions:
1. Where is your page?
2. Are you using this because someone likes the idea, or because the server is administered by someone who only makes Joomla available?
2.A. If the former, do you have root on the system? Are you responsible for administrating Joomla along with developing the pages?
2.B. If the latter, is your only access through the web GUI, or can you access your raw scripts and database?

Btw, I should point out that I'm not a pro with Joomla, I only know about it because when the UI first started looking at a content management system we were looking a Mambo. At the time Mambo was too complex and buggy, and we ditched it.
I was then part of the review for Joomla 1.0, which wasn't ready for release.
I am not, by any means, a Joomla expert. Or even a Joomla user. Or even anyone who really knows about Joomla. But I remember that I could figure stuff out, if I was given enough time.

If you have a choice, try to get them to let you use Drupal. Much better CMS, with a good selection of plugin/extensions that do exactly what you want.

Joomla is shit, and Drupal is really complicated. If you're looking to have a website that simple, why bother with a CMS? lol
Hell, maybe a forum like phpbb would work for what you want, thats simple to install.

I setup Joomla for a website like a year ago. Made my own theme (sorta). Now I forget the login information to the website so I can only see that it's still Under Construction with a login screen... Go figure.
Edit: I remembered why I gave up on it... I was making this website called www.EverythingDiablo.com for someone with a Diablo 3 fetish but they lost all interest and I said fuck it. As you can see it looks like butt cause I never finished the freaking theme... From what I remember setting it up with the default shit was pretty easy, providing you know very little about Linux and PHP and how to make a mySQL account/db. The install script should do everything for you and usually tells you what you did wrong if you fucked up. I guess I should shut that shit down before I get sued by Blizzard or something... :\

Senion week 2010!!! Wait your still in High School?......
Lots of drinking
Sucking face
Walking home 5 miles in sandals (ALONE)
More sucking face
No I will not marry you (even though you are an oral "hygenist")
I hate you but I love you
Screw you guys..... I'm going home. (Big ups to Kait and Dani for driving 6 hours to pick me up at 5 am.)
So back to the website. I don't actually need to use Joomla now. We kinda scratched that but still want to make the site. Anyone know what program will def be able to make a site like icanhascheezburger. Someone suggested Drupal, I haven't looked at it yet but I will. I am sure I will have questions, maybe the community forums will be easier for me to navigate and figure it out.
Any other programs out there people know about before I start trying random ones. Free if possible!!:D:D:D

If you're a .NET guy then maybe also check out DotNetNuke. It's a .NET CMS with a lot of the same kind of add-on modularity of Drupal.
Lots of hosting providers out there for DotNotNuke too.
