I'm looking forward to this one too. I've played almost every BattleTech/MechWarrior game since 1988. I just looked up the first game I played, couldn't remember the name. It was called BattleTech: The Crescent Hawk's Inception. At the time it just blew me away. I had played the Battletech board game before that too.

The BattleTech/MechWarrior games have been a bit of a mixed bag through the years. All the MechWarrior PC games were pretty decent, i thought at least. And the MechAssault games they did on the Xbox were pretty fun too. I hope this one turns out well.

It is going to launch as a F2P game isn't it?

So you join factions that battle each other or is it more like guilds.

Seems pretty cool I may check this one out a little, time allowing.

There will be 6 factions in the game...

HOUSE KURITA (DRACONIS COMBINE)

Empire Designation: Draconis Combine
Ruling Noble: Coordinator Takashi Kurita
Government: Autocracy (Japanese feudal stylings)
Capital (City, World): Imperial City, Luthien
Dominant Languages: Japanese (official), Arabic, English
Founding Year: 3219

The first full-scale interstellar military operation was launched in 2303, and it eventually led to the formation of the Draconis Combine in 2319. Unlike other Inner Sphere nations, which were formed through the union of already-established alliances of planets, the Draconis Combine owed its birth to one world and the indomitable will of one man: Shiro Kurita. Though Shiro used political wrangling when it suited him, he constructed the Combine mainly by the sword. Raised in strict adherence to the ancient Japanese code of bushido (the way of the warrior), Shiro spread this philosophy as he expanded his empire. Today, seven centuries after its foundation, the Draconis Combine bears a striking resemblance to Japan of the shogun era, where daimyos—lords—rule their worlds and military districts while their samurai—mostly MechWarriors—enforce their word as law. From highest to lowest, all act for the greater glory of the Draconis Combine and its ruling House Kurita.

HOUSE DAVION (FEDERATED SUNS)

Empire Designation: Federated Suns (half of the Federated Commonwealth)
Ruling Noble: First Prince Hanse Davion
Government: Constitutional Aristocracy (Western European feudal stylings)
Capital (City, World): New Avalon City, New Avalon
Dominant Languages: English (official), French, German
Founding Year: 2317

Formed with the signing of the Crucis Pact in 2317, the Federated Suns was intended to stand against the Terran Hegemony's unabashed expansion. However, the Federated Suns faced its first major challenges from the Capellan Confederation. Continued Capellan aggression, including interference in the Suns' disastrous twenty-sixth-century civil war, cemented a deep hatred that has burned between the two nations for centuries. Many Federated Suns citizens harbor similar animosity toward their other neighbor, the Draconis Combine, though this enmity stems from the more recent Kentares Massacre. The Federated Suns has been especially prominent in the thirty-first century. The political and economic marriage of the Suns to the economically powerful Lyran Commonwealth, which together formed the Federated Commonwealth, struck fear in the hearts of many—especially given Prince Hanse Davion's impressive territorial gains during the Fourth Succession War, which coincided with the Federated Commonwealth's inception.

HOUSE LIAO (CAPELLAN CONFEDERATION)

Empire Designation: Capellan Confederation
Ruling Noble: Chancellor Romano Liao
Government: Dictatorship (Chinese feudal stylings)
Capital (City, World): Zi-jin Cheng (Forbidden City), Sian
Dominant Languages: Chinese (Mandarin, official), Chinese (Cantonese), Russian, English, Hindi
Founding Year: 2366

The Capellan Confederation is a survivor, thanks to its greatest asset—its people. A Capellan citizen sees it as his or her duty to serve the nation first and himself second; individual rights are therefore subordinate to the needs of the state. Regarded as repressive by most other Successor States and smaller political entities, this simple trait has allowed the Capellan nation to survive and prosper even after the Federated Commonwealth broke its back in the Fourth Succession War. As always, adversity merely strengthens the Capellan Confederation. Despite what some realms regard as "repressive," individuals are encouraged to better themselves and may marry into a higher caste or qualify for one on their own merits. The only real bias in the Confederation is a favorable disposition toward those citizens who embrace their nation's rich cultural heritage. The Capellan legacy extends back centuries further than that of other Great Houses, having its roots in the ancient heritage of the Han (Chinese) people of Terra.

HOUSE MARIK (FREE WORLDS LEAGUE)

Empire Designation: Free Worlds League
Ruling Noble: Captain-General Thomas Marik
Government: Parliamentary Confederacy (operating under military rule)
Capital (City, World): Atreus City, Atreus
Dominant Languages: English (official), Spanish, Greek, Romanian, Urdu
Founding Year: 2271

Technically a federation rather than a true nation, the Free Worlds League has been plagued by divisive conflicts throughout its history. Until recently, this balkanization greatly limited the League's impact on external events. The current Captain-General, Thomas Marik, a war leader with dictatorial powers appointed "for the duration of the crisis," has done much to centralize power and bring out the nation's true strength. Citizens of the League value their right to express themselves freely—more so than almost any other realm—leading to a broad acceptance of differing cultures and values along with an appreciation for the arts and education. Business and the pursuit of material gain, including the recovery of technology, are central to League life. Ironically, though the League pioneered much of the medical technology used during the Star League era, social pressures have since led many to scorn bionics and other replacement technologies, particularly among the lower classes.

HOUSE STEINER (LYRAN COMMONWEALTH)

Empire Designation: Lyran Commonwealth (half of the Federated Commonwealth)
Ruling Noble: Archon Melissa Steiner Davion
Government: Constitutional Monarchy (with German Feudal stylings)
Capital (City, World): Tharkad City, Tharkad
Dominant Languages: English and German (official), Scottish Gaelic, Italian, French
Founding Year: 2341

The Lyran Commonwealth has never been regarded as a military power, but it remains a political and economic force to be reckoned with. Though governed by a feudal system like most of the other Successor States, the Commonwealth maintains loose control over member worlds and business interests while actively encouraging a thriving capitalist economy. This, along with the fact that its territory includes some of the Inner Sphere's richest and most heavily industrialized worlds, made the Lyran realm an economic superpower almost since its inception. Work, trade and profit are the central concerns of most Lyrans, who have grown accustomed to high standards of living. The life of luxury even extends to the Lyran military, where power, privilege and prestige are derived from rank—earned as often as not by whom one knows, rather than what one knows or has done.

FREE RASALHAGUE REPUBLIC

Empire Designation: Free Rasalhague Republic
Ruling Noble: Elected Prince Haakon Magnusson
Government: Representative Parliament
Capital (City, World): Reykjavik, Rasalhague
Dominant Languages: Swedish (official), English, Japanese, Swedenese, German
Founding Year: 3034

In the mid-twenty-third century, citizens of the Federal Republics of Norway, Sweden and Finland emigrated to Rasalhague. Though conquered by the expanding Draconis Combine and ruled by that realm for centuries, the fiercely independent Rasalhagians rebelled at every opportunity. In 3034, Haakon Magnusson declared the formation of the Free Rasalhague Republic. The Lyran Commonwealth and Draconis Combine acknowledged the Republic and gave up control of ancestral Rasalhague worlds within their own borders. Some Combine soldiers opposed their leaders' actions and attacked the newborn Republic in what became known as the Ronin Wars; the Combine declared them traitors and helped the small Republic army defend its nation. Several mercenary units hired during this period took advantage of poorly written contracts or stopped fighting because of them, which fueled strong anti-mercenary sentiment that persists to this day.

Man, I've been talking to Jordan Weissman for a few years about making a MW MMO. I really wish I could get some traction on it. I think it could be awesome. Hopefully this game opens the door to that kind of project.

Yep. I'm a Sr Designer on EQ. Almost 5 years now on this game. I'm ready for something new for sure, but I like the money I make on EQ thanks to royalties and a yearly launch bonus. Plus the team I work with absolutely kicks ass. We've got ZERO personality conflicts on the team right now, which is very rare.

Three words. $80? FUCK THAT!

Ya, the game itself it F2P, but to make some $$ monthly they are using the in-game real cash BS in games that I honestly don't like.

The Dev's have said in the past that if you are good at controlling your Mech you shouldn't need to use real $$ for anything....We'll see if that holds up.

I got into the beta for this and I am pretty impressed so far. The graphics are solid (CryEngine 3 rocks) and they replicated the feel of previous MW games really well I think. And unlike the original Crysis (and CryEngine) you don't need a liquid nitrogen cooled supercomputer to run it. I am running an AMD HD6850 still and it purrs along well at max settings on my 24" monitor. They did a good job of translating WASD/Mouse controls to this and have most of the other keyboard shortcuts in the vicinity. I remember back in the day, you pretty much had to play MW with a joystick, so it is nice to see that they made it work without one (although it still supports a joystick or gamepad if you so desire).

It is still missing a few features, the Mech Lab doesn't have all the heat/damage info for the different weapons, so trying to find the right weapon/heat balance is kind of trial and error at this point, but I see the little scales for heat and damage on the UI so I'm sure it will get put in before release. The only game mode they have in the beta now is 8v8 matches on a few maps. They claim to be adding more modes before it releases and territory struggles between the various "Houses" in the MW world. I'm not sure what they are going to charge for, prob quicker access to different weapons/upgrades, etc. (similar to other F2P games)

Overall I think it is quite good for a F2P game and I'll be playing it.

Ok, I got in the beta yesterday (all Founders preorders get instant access). Lots of fun. Don't use the trial mechs, just go buy an Atlas or something with the free pay for currency they give you. The trial mechs and the default models of most mechs are just horrible. The game is not very friendly to you so it's in your best interest to read the Beta guides forums for how to setup weapon groups and one of the threads has the full control list... Z, H and N are god sends on some maps.

Yeah, it took me a bit to figure out the weapon groups as well. Supposedly you will be able to do that from the MechLab, they just haven't implemented it yet. I think I stumbled upon H (heat vision) and N (night vision) by accident when I was trying to figure out the weapon groups, heh heh.

Got into the beta tonight...

Not sure what else they want to do with the game, but it doesn't seem ready for release to me. For what is in there, it is fun....and it did take a few to figure out how to group the weapons. Odd system to do it, but once you do it.....it is really easy.

In the beta also, I'm not sure how they're going to be able to make their projected release date of Aug 7th (early release).

The game itself works and I have fun with it, but it just feels completely incomplete.

As far as the free to play model I hear they're basing it heavily on world of tanks which I can see make sense (I'm assuming world of tanks actually makes enough money to keep the servers running).

I've had a few crash to desktop while playing but other than that It seems to run fine.

I can see this game being really fun if you had a regular group to play with.

Valdis

Well that question is answered Aug 7th isn't a release at all just a continuation of the closed beta it seems... Well better that then to hose their release with an unfinished game.
