Hello :D
For me and most RPG fans that i know, squaresoft began the console RPG universe. So i thought i'd start a thread about it and see how many people in hoss love the classic square RPGs i do.
The all time classic for me, the game that started me out on RPGs, was Final Fantasy II (IV japan). It will always be one of my favorites because it totally took rpgs and games in general to a new level.
But my favorite is probably Chrono Trigger, because it was so awesome :D (as those who know the game can tell from the jumping Marle under my name hehe)
So what was everyone else's favorite and why?

Yep Kain was cool, but was kinda annoying how he kept betraying you and all, he did that what 3 times? lol
who voted FF8? It was a good game but i dont think it lived up to it's name. beat it too quick and the draw system was lame.

Mmmm, need more games with Yasunori Mitsuda soundtracks..
And who voted for FF8? Bleck, draw draw draw bo-ring.
Gotta say #1.
I didn't play any after hm, 7 or so, they were going in a direction I didn't really enjoy.

1 was the best. I still remember everything about that game. I think I was something like 12 when it came out. It pretty much got me started on RPG"s in general.
You get your boat, you get your air ship, you take bahamut his tail and grow up to be big and strong, then you go back to the first "dungeon" run through it and relive all the past nightmares only to find out that the wimpy weenie first boss is now the god awful nightmare of them all.
Plus the little crumble thing that happened when you killed the major bosses was the greatest. I mean, how can special effects surpass that? hehe. If only the emperor died that way when you you downed him. Oh my....

FF 1 and 2(US ) were my favorite of the series....but Chronotrigger was my favorite Square game by far.

I've played every one of them with exception to FF 10 and any future releases. I didn't bother buying a playstation 2. I had everquest, and no time for it.
I gave my props to 1 because if not for having played it I never would have hunted down the rest the way that I did. Y'know the classic. You know its out in japan, and can't wait for the translation or break down and try and play the foreign copy on a mod'd system and wind up wasting more money because it doesn't work right. Yeehawwwww

FF1 because it was my first RPG, way the hell back when I was like 6 :). I had been reading about it in Nintendo Power for a few months, and when it finally came out I had scraped up just enough money to buy it, and then I found out it was going to be a month late in Canada. So I got Faxanadu (I think that's what it was called) instead, and that game bit. But when I finally got my hands on FFI, I loved it :).

What about Final Fantasy Tactics? I love that game.
Kenthia
07-16-2002, 07:31 PM
The japanese only releases fit into the other catagory because they arent so popular, Final Fantasy Tactics isnt really an RPG (but honestly, i just forgot to put it as an option hehe).
Final Fantasy Tactics was deffinately a great game, Orlando kicked butt, just wish cloud was a little better lol.

you mean Final Fantasy Mystic Quest? it wasnt too bad once it got going it was pretty fun. Doesnt compair to the other Final Fantasy games though, of course, it wasnt really even a part of the series. I dont think it was even released in japan lol.

Chrono Trigger just blew me away, cool story, badass graphics and was always fun to come back to and search for new shiznit (like the hidden triple techs, or dialogues).
FF7.... heh, the save game stops counting hours after 99+, it just turns red and sticks at 99. :/ Learning how to woop the weapon dragons was a blast, as well as all the great side quests.
Only bad point was how long some of the Summon scripts took. Knights of the Round, BWAH.

07-16-2002, 11:20 PM
Final Fantasy 7 was such a good game, the Materia system was awesome, the story was great, and the summons were great dispite how long they sometimes took hehe. the only bad things i can think of about FF7 is how dull Midgard was in the begining, and how easy the last boss was (hello sephiroth, here's 6 Knights of the Round cast in one turn, well goodbye!)
oh and did i mention Aeris?! i curse that game till i die for that reason :( but its probably one of my favorites for the emotion the game caused too, no other game has moved me like that before, though Xenogears came close.
Oh and i loved the snowboarding game ^-^

Yea, Mystic Quest! I personally thought the game was total garbage. I know they weren't trying to make a FF game, because there was some pretty big departures in the gameplay, but even if it didn't have the FF name stamped on it, it still would have sucked!

Hehe. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. That was the one where you had to "camp" those little monster generators until you beat enough of them that they exploded and you could move on.
Oh yay.

Yeah and I'm supose to make a definate decision?!?!?
ff3(6 in japan) is by far my most favorite rpg on any system so far. It was an amazing game with a lot of stuff in it that totally blew my mind when it came out. It had summons (espers) one of the first open ended magic learning systems and you could put whoever you wanted in your party, and everyone had different abilities. It had the first limit break type attacks (yeah, rare as hell, I only saw a couple till I replayed it, then I noticed they went off a ton more) and most importantly, it had Kefka. He strikes me as the single most insane/evil badguy in all the final fantasy games by far. Golbez doesn't hold a candle to him ;)
Mystic quest was designed for younger players or those not familiar with the RPG world in general. It wasn't honestly a horrible game, but it if you have any rpg experience at all really it was ridiculously easy and time consuming. (ok, maybe not time consuming, I think I beat it in like 4 played hours once ><) It was just way oversimplified. Kinda like the FF Adventure series for Gameboy, if you had ever played Zelda type games it was retarded-easy.

I still think FF3.
Espers were the best and easiest magic system they've come up with yet. Plus, ALL the characters were so well defined and had such strong personalities in FF3. They seem more real than any of the characters from 8,9,10 who all just seem to have multiple personality disorders or who just plain don't know who the hell they are.
FF7 Materia was good, but a bit vague for the person that didn't want to spend too much time reading about all the combinations in a magazine guide.

I think FF7 was the best. I loved that game even tho I only got to the 2nd disc 3 times (brothers erased memory cards /sigh) but one day i will beat it. Can you get ff2 or ff3 on an emulater? if so I might have to check them out.

FF7 had a great story and lots of freedom to do what you wanted to do... whenever. Also the materia system was well planned, but not too complex. All in all, the game rocked. And the chicken races are the win!
FF8 was total trash. Neat graphics, semi-decent story, an ignorant ass card game, and simple fights. This certainly didn't live up to the expectations.
Final Fantasy Tactics = the sh1z0t~

If you like FF2 though you should get the retranslated playstation version (also comes with chrono trigger! :D), just because for the US it was kinda dumbed down, the translation was bad and a lot of stuff was taken out (i recall a dancer who jumped out of her skirt in the japanese version lol).
FF3 was totally awesome, but kefka (or as i call him, the psycho clown) was a little weird for my tastes, Sephiroth and Golbez were cool enemies so they rank a little higher for me ^-^

FF 1 was the first, and it was on regular Nintendo !. If it had been on Super Ninetendo I think it would be winning hands down. It wasn't pretty, but it was by far the most challenging of all of them. It seemed like as the series went along it got easier and easier until FF 8 which was a freaking cake walk/timesink. Whats worse ssra camping for keys or drawing magic? ; / there's a poll.
Maybe one just seemed harder because I was so much younger and new to it all, but when I think back it was challenging as hell. I can still remember going through the ice cave to get the stone to raise the airship, and running into a group of those mages with squid faces. God that erase ability gave me a complex : /
i personally loved all of them, 7 was great, i liked 8 because i thought it had some very cool concepts...unfotunatly they were not ocmpletely developed as they could have been, never played 9, and i love 10. Final Fantasy Tactics certainly ruled as did Chrono Trigger.
But my favorite? Xenogears by far. Long enough to keep me happy for a long time, and very cool story line. I can't wait for Xenosaga in October....it has potential to be awesome.

Wut, where's seiken densetsu 3 (or secret of mana 2)? :D That game was a fun "upgrade" to SoM with how you picked classes etc. Err, maybe it never did get translated though? :(
I voted FF3 anyway, the story in that game pwnz.

I voted FF7 I loved that game. Wish they didnt kill Aeris off. that was so sad :/ but Sephiroth was the win though.
seiken densetsu 3 was never released on anything but the famicom to my knowledge (japanese snes~) but a group of people spent a good 3 months or so translating the entire game, you can dl the rom and find the translation patch on a lot of rom emulator sites. Good game, but anything that requires more manual dexterity than menu options to win fights doesn't really rate rpg in my book, more like a hybrid action/rpg (I think they were refered to as "Adventure" titles according to the old Nintendo Power.
Still a really good title, I'm playing through it now actually (picked hawk with carlie and angela as teamates, decent challenge) just hit my first class change, it's just like the size of the upgrades in ff1. you go from being a weenie to kicking serious ass ;)

Truthfully, had I actually got the second cd burnt of Xenogears, I bet I would have chose that as my favorite... That game was kickass, and it reminded me of Evangelion *Anime, that is kickass* so I really liked it. However I chose Secret of Mana as my favorite, just because it had one of the most easy-to-abuse magic systems I've ever seen... Big jelly blob anyone? Actually, I probably liked every game in the FF series equally, cept 8.. it was anus. Its too hard to REALLY choose the best one, but hey, its fun to try I guess.

Ohhhh yeah... Just curious.. but did anyone else have a minorly rough time killing Kefka? I remember it being a beast of a battle, and I tell my friend about it... so then hes like, watch this. The little bastard had all that imp armor and spanked Kefka with the fierceness... it was quite possibly the gayest thing I've ever seen... Anyone else remember that cheese?

I don't remember having much trouble with kefka, but I was a really high level on him.
I spent ages levelling in that forest where the dinosaurs spawned that occasionally dropped economizers. Was pretty close to 99's on everyone. Maybe not realm and gau. I couldn't stand either of them.
Gogo was the best !

Enix did so sorry. Dragon Warrior came out about a year before Final Fantasy did. And is also in its 8 or 9th Sequel. Not really sure havent payed much attention to the ones that were realsed in Japan. Nuff said as this Squaresoft did not start it Kenthia.

Dragon warrior 1 was horrid though. Oh the days spent killing blue and red slimes and the ever scary wizard guys. Then there was that "dragon" you rescued the princess from. Oh man. That game was just one big timesink hehe.

Yeah I know, I lapped SD3 on emu :) And it is a rpg in my book, just like EQ (although MMO as it is, it's still a rpg).
RPG is a very abused title to put on a game though. To tell the truth, is there any game out there where you don't "play a role"? It's gotten to the point where most people just twist it to what they like. Some say if you build a character with stats and skills it's a RPG. Some say if you play a character making different choices (evil, good, neutral, lawful, chaotic, whatever) and building a personality, it's a RPG. I'd think the latter is more truthful, but that rules out most of the FF games as there aren't really alot of choices to make when it comes down to it.
*shrug* :)

Dragon warrior is where I got started with the RPG's...oh and that dragon that guards the princess, it can be put to sleep and beat with a bamboo stick. I did it. Back in the day it was fun, i even played the second but thats all. Running round getting Erdricks armor etc, it was a classic. had to search in the mud at that abandoned city and fight a knight for the erdricks sword...ah here comes the flashbacks...nuff from me.

Dragon warrior 1 just wasn't the most memorable experience for me, but I was pretty young at the time. Dragon Warrior 2 was okay, but I can't say I was a huge fan until 3. I can't even remember if I finished the first one or not. I know I killed that dragon, and I remember searching on some square that damaged you, or just past one to find that item and getting attacked by the big knight. It was just too long ago. The only thing I remember a lot was that you fought 1 thing at a time, and there wasn't a big variety.

So what are your thoughts on DW 7? hehe
Svolthoh
07-20-2002, 09:35 AM
Might want to consider this biased, because I am a huge Dragon Warrior fan (played and beat the first at 7 years old, and never missed another on release days until they stopped shipping DW to America). But I think DW7 kicks ass. Played it through a few months back, story line is pretty linear just like all other DW games. But a large amount of side quests, can build two different towns (Monster town and human town), and the class building system which is similar to DW6 (found a translated version awhile ago, decent game itself). To my knowledge there is maybe 60 to 100 classes to build on, and you can switch back and forth whenever you want, etc. And of course, there is the casinos =)
Dragon Warrior games have never had a storyline as good as Final Fantasy, but who gives a shit, they are all pretty fun. Dragon Warrior 4 got redone for playstation with some added features, not sure if it will be shipped to the U.S.A. And I *think* DW8 got put on standby for the time being =( Hope they get it out in a fair amount of time, unlike how long 7 took.

Dragon warrior's were titles on my always buy list. I just think they vastly improved them as the series went on. FF was just always good, and almost seems to be getting worse now : (.
I always wanted to play the ones after 4, but I never saw them for purchase in the U.S. I saw some screens of the one on the famicom. It looked awesome.

Fasad, DW5 and 6 are easy to get for an emulator, and not that hard to find a translated one as well. 7 came out last October(?) and should be pretty easy to find for like 30-40 bucks. Was in HIGH demand when it first came out, but I think most of the DW junkies have already gotten it. And yea Vinen... some of those shards are a bitch to find. Why, on a certain shard after about 4 hours of trying to find it, I screamed at the top of my lungs "GOD DAMN THIS FUCKING GAME". Then my fiance started laughing at me and I was pretty embarrased =/ Only other game that has ever made me scream like that was EQ. It is still worth playing though! =)
