Phaera was born the daughter of one Phestorous Mal`Arcane, and his wife, Lielia Thalvaine. Her parents were both strong weilders of magic of their own right, a wizard and a magician, respectively. Rumor had it, Phestorous had taken a mistress in his short time with his wife, another young wizardess by the name of Ethaol. So when the call of studies came, Lielia urged her husband to travel, and take their now 7yr old daughter with him.

She was amazed by the beauty of the Ocean of Tears. It was the deepest blue, with small islands all around, and each carried a myriad of creatures, her father would tell her. She now understood her mother's infatuation with her deity, Prexus, and his control of the marvelous oceans. It was a pleasant trip, and she enjoyed the attention her father gave her. It was then that she saw the port of Butherblock, and soonafter Felwithe.

While her father studied and progressed in his skills, Phestorous had a tutor teach young Phaera how to read, write, and the many virtues of being a respectful young woman. Her tutor would take her to the temple of Tunare, where Phaera became intriqued by the priests and their devotion to their Mother. However, what truly caught her eye were the holy knights of the Gods, called Paladins. She decided to study them the entire time she had free while in the city, before both she and her father would return home again, his studies having ended. She learned a great deal about the Paladins.

Her parents were amused by her willingness to learn, and a few years later, allowed her to be enrolled at the Temple of Quellious. It was around this time that Phestorous' former mistress reappeared in the Mal`Arcane's lives. Ethaol had become a necromancer, and in her devotion to Cazic-Thule, would teach the Mal`Arcanes not to cross her again. In the ensuing battle, Phestorous covered his daughter's body with his own, while Lielia unleashed the fury of Prexus onto her most despised foe. In the aftermath, both women had been slain.

Her father knew her destiny, and encouraged her to embrace it after their mother's funeral. So while Phestorous surrendered the life of a wizard, vowing never to use his sorcery again, in the name of his wife, Phaera was busy at the temple, learning the skills of swordplay, and the philosophies of Quellious. It was then that she decided that she knew she was to travel, and show Norrath Quellious' deeds. Upon completing her studies at the temple, the newly deemed paladin departed Erudin, promising her Father she would return soon to visit.

Phaera found life in Antonica harsh compared to such settled life in Erudin. She made her way to Freeport, where she met her mentor Kaeori Soulreaver, a Teir'Dal of all things. At the time, Phaera thought the enchantress was a Erudite, much like herself. After much time spent in deep conversation, Phaera learned of Kaeori's true origins. Kaeori took Phaera under her wing and equipped her with some basic armor.

Before Kaeori could teach her more, she was distracted with a situation with a group of cultists called the Gresh'Maj. Phaera, eager to please her new teacher, offered to learned what she could of the Gresh'Maj. Travelling with Kaeori's friend and fellow guildmate Junivera, a shaman from Halas, they travelled to Qeynos, where they would meet many others. Even after the horrendous events she witnessed, Phaera knew what she must do. While learning much of what she could, Phaera met the Master Paladin Scrith Swiftblade. He was one whom would make a lasting impact on her life.
