I'd just like to share some of my favorite bands with everyone ...

Devin Townsend - Prog meets classic heavy metal meets general musical godliness. My all-time favourite.

Thought Industry - Earlier albums are Fugazi meets Prog, more recent albums are Radiohead meets Faith No More

Arcturus - Most recent album is somewhat proggy, somewhat electronic, but very cool. Unique.

Bumblefoot - Bording on Nu-metal at times ... but Ron Thal, the guitarist / vocalist / songwriter is a God. Ron shreds better than most everyone, sings like Mike Patton, and writes painfully catchy music.

Ulver - Trip-hop, techno, trancy .. this track isn't indicative, but it's a start. Each Ulver album is different. Their second disk was actually raw black metal, followed by a release that was completely acoustic .. etc.

Winds - Dark Prog .. something like EverGrey, with less embarassing vocals.

Strapping Young Lad - The band fear factory wish they were.

Isis - Oh my ... new album ... amazing stuff. Indie / hardcore with plenty of neurosis.

Opeth - Probably my second favorite after Devin Townsend .. amazing melodic black / death metal. For those who don't mind lots of clean vocals and mellow interludes with their death metal. Amazing.

Fugazi - The kings of indie rock.

Dark Tranquillity - One of the better gothenburg melodeath bands.

Iced Earth - The band that got me into metal; a bit embarassing, but thus is powermetal. Good mindless stuff.

Sigh - Strange japanese band ... very good, and odd, music. Black metal meets 70s psych

Porcupine Tree - A band it seems most of you have heard of .. just thought I'd make it easier for the lazier ones out there to give them a shot. Mellow pink floyd meets radiohead .. though, at times, can get chaotic and heavy.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - For all you people with a silly dark romantic side, nick cave is a god. Offkey though emotional vocals, great lyrics, and amazing music to go along with them.

Some good stuff in that list. Iced Earth has long been on my play list. They put on one of the best live shows ever IMO. I had never heard of Winds before....definitely cool from the few songs I managed to find. I'll have to keep an eye out for some of their cds.

I've never seen Iced Earth live .. but their Alive in Athens release, if it's any indication, is amazing - probably their best release overall, actually.

.. and Winds .. well, they only have an EP and album released so far, they're a side-project of Hellhammer's. (of Mayhem, Arcturus, the Kovenant, Thorns, Dødheimsgard, and probably others .. he's a busy guy)

Heh I think I'm the only person into Porcupine Tree, though I guess some have heard it from me?

Nice to see another fan, I also liked Iced Earth, pretty intense live show!
