She lived her life alone. Truth be told, she had become so accustomed to solitude that it was soon more a comfort than a necessity. A restless and unruly child, she often ventured into the commonlands away from the protection of her forest. It was here that she’d learned her most valuable lessons about the cruelty of the lesser races. She was aware, of course, that the pales jealously hated and shunned her kind. She’d suffered the insults, the scorn and the brutal attacks. Sometimes she could outrun them, their vulgar curses echoing in her ears and her heart pounding in her chest as she fled for the safety of Nektulos. When she was lucky she could outrun them, too often she was caught, beaten and left for dead. Wits and luck kept her alive and she thanked Innoruuk that she’d avoided rape, many teir’dal weren’t so fortunate.

She’d learned early on that she was different. Marked from birth as a soldier of Hate, a chosen child of The Father. She bore his symbol over her heart and wielded the arcane power of his touch; the power to harm and even kill with a touch of her hand. She was hated and feared by many, even some of her own kind. Of course the other teir’dal respected her caste, the power of the Dead was as impressive as it was horrifying. Necromancy was perhaps a macabre art, but the members of the Dead were absolutely devoted to The Father.

“Of the Father, for the Father!” Vinilaa and her sister, Antiopa, would chant as they ran through Nektulos hunting out the intruders from Rivervale who sought to practice their druidic arts on teir’dal lands. Vinilaa cackled as she scalped their tiny heads, the Indigo Brotherhood paid a pretty penny for those scull caps.

Vinilaa plunged forward though the slime and muck that filled the crude mud tunnels of the Frogluks. She had raided this region many times and was not well liked in this place, the guards had orders to kill her on sight.

She stepped into the shadows and quietly worked her way down past the minotaur caverns, occasionally one would spot her and she’d have to lure him into a secluded tunnel and quickly slit his throat before he could call others to his aid. The minotaurs were large creatures and as hairy as they were foul. She turned her head as the blood spurted from his neck splattering her mud-coated armor with bright red droplets.

The body hidden she continued on toward her goal, the Frogluk King himself. He would die by her hand and his sword and crown would be hers.

It was not an easy task she had set for herself but she was well accustomed to dressing her own wounds on the battlefield or draining her victims’ lifeforce in order to prolong her stamina during difficult fights.

She turned the corner and entered the cavern outside the King’s chamber. She animated the skeleton of one of her victims to assist her. These servants of the Dead were most useful and completely, albeit mindlessly, loyal.

“Frrooooaaakkk! Heretic! Nonbeliever!” It would seem she’d been discovered…

She deftly slashed the throat of the advancing frogluk but it was too late, the alarm had been sounded and she was soon surrounded. The pet fended them off but was soon defeated and Vinilaa was too weak to fight the remaining frogs alone. She felt a strong blow to the back of her head as she turned to flee, she sank to her knees as the darkness overtook her.

She woke dizzy and disoriented. She reached for her sword but where a scabbard should have been she felt…a bare leg. “By the father what has happened to me?” She wondered aloud. How could she be alive and where was she? She spun around at the sound of drunken singing and found herself facing a human soldier of some sort. He was lying in the mud, obviously badly wounded and stinking drunk.

“What is this place?” She asked him as she stepped away from the outstretched hand that reached for her leg.

“Innothule Schwamp” He slurred as he futilely reached toward her again. “Schay you’re a good looking inky hows abouts we have schome fun?”

“Perhaps another time,” she grimaced as she spoke but she didn’t want to spook him, not just yet. “I need to retrieve my things from the Frogluks first.”

He blinked as he looked at her barely concealing his gap toothed grin, “yer sure not dressed to go in there, why not jus schtay her with me?”

She smiled at him as she siphoned his last bit of lifeforce into her. “Indeed, I am a bit underdressed,” she grabbed the sword from his lifeless grip, “But sometimes we just have to make due with what we can find.”
