Maybe the Watchmen producers were trying to plug another movie.
    Firanja - Medicor Mortuus
    Andaas Taranis - Druidicus Corpsus
    Andae - Clericus Inanimis

the superhero deal is really a treatment of humans as heroes, not necessarily that they were superhuman. The only superhuman has really ascended beyond humanity due to his creation and as such provides Moore with the ability to have an "impartial" observer to the events of the story

and yeah im trying to be as ambiguous as possible to not give spoilers

but the point kakeku is if superheros are supposed to save the world, and that's what they believe they are here for, what happens when as humans they encounter their failings and wind up losing the battle with evil, yet the end result is something better than anything they could have ever accomplished following an "ends dont justify the means" philosophy.

How would you as a human, or as a hero, handle that truth revealed in the last pages of the graphic novel.

The people in the story arent defined really by their powers. If you watch it closely, theyre really defined by their relationships. Abusive moms, control freak ex super hero mom, living in the shadow of a well known predecessor, inability to sexually function outside of latex, attempt to continue to BE human while those around you may be dying by their very proximity, who is my father, am I a babysitter, what is the best way to save everyone, what is the best way to let everyone know the real story behind the world they don't care to see

the story isn't about their powers at all. It's about a personal struggle with being human while wearing a cape.

Without too much more, you've got to put yourself in the mid 80s when this came out. Cold War is winding to a close but we don't know it yet. Capitalism wins over Stalinist Communism, but we're still keeping a close eye on Poland and the eastern bloc countries who are becoming more and more western friendly...Reagan is in office, in his second term, and the US has regained a lot of world cred. There was this ideological struggle that in our world was maybe winding to a conclusion...

But in Moore's world we never left the 70s Nixon era of political control and dark behind the scenes machinations. We "won" the Cold War by the appearance of Doc Manhattan, and like in every good arms argument, the creation of one ultimate weapon leads to the research of the next, and soon the world is pointing nukes at each other across the oceans.

So Moore needs a way to give us a cautionary tale too, something abotu the evil in man when he thinks its us against them (the whole Black Freighter can be tied in here too, the cautionary tale it gives mankind, but thats not in the movie)...and he does, he gives the world a reason to unite, and the superheros of the world if they had succeeded would have left the world stumbling towards Armageddon.

Closing, and a tidbit towards those who havent seen it, this shouldn't spoil too much for the movie. For the book it does though.

In 1985, in discussions with Gorbachev, President Reagan makes this statement:

"how easy his task and mine might be in these meetings that we held if suddenly there was a threat to this world from some other species from another planet outside in the universe. We'd forget all the little local differences that we have between our countries .."

Kakeku if you can grab a copy of the book it's just awesome. Read it like you believe there are people out there who just want to save the world because that's what heroes are supposed to do. Then watch it fall flat. And you'll see why the Comedian laughed.
