Now A legit question... for anyone that knows.
As far as Bleach storyline and manga: What exactly constitutes a Shinigami? Is it a dead person that has a lot of spirit power and thus becomes one of the protectors? How does that work? Rukia isn't actually the sister to Byakuya... they didn't know eachother for a long time. Is she part of the same same squad as Byakuya? She would be working under Renji, if that was the case, right?
Then how does a living person become a Shinigami? If Ichigo's dad is a shinigami, how is Ichigo of "noble blood"? This confuses me so. Why didn't Ichigo's dad save his wife? What kind of lameness Shinigami is he?

Bah, hang me now. The diary sequence is a conundrum that I didn't quite pickup ><. So I'm sure Animenoob was translating it right when it was doing it in pass tense. It's a diary entry that is dated 2006 (kyonen, so last year) but is written with the future (May 30th) in past tense. My bweh.
I'm going to go with Death God fansub. Word on the internet is that they are the original group of Toriyama's World just rebranded. They lost their original translator cause he works for Viz, which licensed Death Note for America, but whoever is translating for them for episode 13 and 14 is really good. Also it has awesome fonts! (Not sure if VLC can show this correctly, but Media Player Classic + CCCP > VLC anyways.)
I'm actually an episode behind Death Note cause I got turned off from watching any new episodes while unsure of what fansub team to follow, and sometimes Saiyaman's raw's color is not good...
About Bleach:
I'm so behind the manga that I think I finally caught up to where I stopped reading in the anime. So most of these are just pure guesswork, and you should take it as that.
I'm guessing Ichigo's dad is in a shell, just like Ichigo's body is a shell when he's a shinigami. And if he hasn't been a shinigami for 20 years, then that means he has been in a shell of a body for more than Ichigo's lifetime (since Ichigo isn't 20 years old yet) so probably he decided to renounce his shinigami hood for one reason or another (my guess is for ichigo's mom, but that's too romantic right?!)
Ichigo's "noble blood" thing is a surprise for the hollow cause up till now he has been treated as a substitue shinigami. He did require Rukia to share part of her "spirit" in order to awaken. But I guess shinigaminess is passed through the genes or something!
Ichigo's dad was nowhere near the accident place that Ichigo's mom got killed. Maybe he was busy with something! or Maybe he was relying on a district shinigami (like Rukia was for Ichigo's neighborhood) to have been on top of his/her job and dealing with the hollow before it struck. =P
End of guesswork.. wish I continued reading the manga =(

It's just odd... I can understand the spirit power being passed from generation to generation. What gets me is that these people die, and THEN become shinigami. Rukia isn't related to Byakuya... but is considered family because of her shinigaminess for lack of a better word. If Ichigo's dad came to earth to have a kid, then he was already dead... and someone had sex with a corpse. Think about that! No wonder Ichigo is messed up.
