Fore our computer nerds. I think I shall build this!!!
$17,000 for just the 24 SSDs. That's awesome though.
Not sure why they were defragging an SSD.
Why Defrag? Why open everything in the start menu at once? Haha. That was awesome. The 2 quad core CPU's may have helped though![]()
I couldn't see if they were defragging a drive or defragging the array.
Defragging an SSD is pointless - I'm not even sure Windows 7 will let you do it.
Defragging an array is still important, though. Especially Raid 5. There's another term for it, but I can't think of it.
It looked to me like they were trying to defrag the drive... Even more confusing was the fact that there were only something like 21 files on the drive...
It depends on the server. A file server could do that pretty easy, I think, but a transaction server (database) has files that grow. A RAID controller can balance the stripes and distribute the parity information, but it's not smart enough to optimize a dynamic file. And it's not like a table can be considered in its whole and divided proportionally, the system has to append, it would be impossible to write out an entire data file each time there is a change. And atomicity will often make the appends too small to divide.
If you have huge data sets with large-scale transactions and peak transaction times (that is, business hours) you're going to develop unbalanced stripes, and if the system is reaching peak neither the RAID controller nor the database is gonna be allowed to do any computations that might tear a write.
Even after things have calmed down the database will be looking at its own optimizations (when a database is indexing it will move appended information to a logical location - sort of like alphabetizing), so letting a RAID controller attempt to balance stripes while a database is attempting to reorganize datasets is madness.

P.S. None of this has anything to do with that video. I couldn't figure out why they would defrag an SSD.
P.P.S. Fuck you, Stosh, I can hear the little gears in your brain turning. You best be choking back that smirk, mister. I do not want to be hearing or smelling any of your poopoo stinky smirky-smirks about indexing.
P.P.P.S. Little gears for little brains, Mr. Smirky-Smirk.

I havent seen that in a very long time. It still makes me giggle like a little school girl. I think it has been in this thread like 3-4 times, it's that good.

A human being is a part of a whole_universe_a part limited in time and space He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest A kind of optical delusion of his consciousness This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty
